| Description |
English: Dock Entrance, London Dock, Wapping. Looking out across the Thames from Wapping. This is the Pier Head at Wapping and the entrance to what was the Western Dock. These docks were created at the start of the 19th century when ships coming up river into London sometimes had to wait days to unload their cargoes. It was the start of a huge dock building programme. Today, the dock entrance is a garden, the dock has been drained - apart from a few canals - and a Sports Centre and housing estate cover the area. The Dock Master's house, built in the late 18th century, is one of the few surviving buildings on the waterfront. |
