El Museo Histórico Sarmiento se asentó en la antigua casa de la Municipalidad de Belgrano, construída por el Arquitecto Antonio Buschiazzo e inaugurada el 8 de diciembre de 1872. En ella, el presidente Avellaneda y parte del Congreso Nacional habían sesionado entre los meses de junio y septiembre de 1880, durante el enfrentamiento del Poder Ejecutivo y el gobernador bonaerense Carlos Tejedor.

Concluída la guerra civil, se firmó allí la Ley de Federalización, por lo cual el edificio fue declarado Monumento Histórico.
