Summary edit
DescriptionDomus Aurea, Nero's Golden House (36453906275).jpg |
Nero's palace built on land acquired in the fire of 64 AD covered a vast track of land from the Palatine hill stretching across the area now covered by Colosseum and beyond. After Nero's death the Romans did as much as they could to efface the memories of his extravagance, hence, the palace was stripped, buried and build on. In addition to the Colosseum, the baths of Trajan covered part of the house. This shot is in the domed octagonal room. Uses of the rooms are largely conjectural, but perhaps this is the room identified by Suetonius as a dining hall.
