Summary edit

Description

Nero's palace built on land acquired in the fire of 64 AD covered a vast track of land from the Palatine hill stretching across the area now covered by Colosseum and beyond. After Nero's death the Romans did as much as they could to efface the memories of his extravagance, hence, the palace was stripped, buried and build on. In addition to the Colosseum, the baths of Trajan covered part of the house.

This shot is in the domed octagonal room. Uses of the rooms are largely conjectural, but perhaps this is the room identified by Suetonius as a dining hall.

Guided tours can be prearranged for the weekend (during the weekdays, excavations are ongoing).

This panographic image was shot with an iPhone SE. Some distortions of the people in the image are due their movements during the "panning." Flash photography is not allowed in the dimly lit excavations, so I simply chose to use my iPhone and get what I could.
