Îlot Fleurie, Québec Acier, 265 x 213.4 x 183 cm Au cours des années 1990, principalement à l’Îlot Fleurie, Don Darby réalise ses dernières œuvres monumentales. Fidèles aux principes de l’artiste, leurs surfaces corrodées mettent en valeur la relation symbiotique entre matière et environnement. L’une d’entre elles, Rebut fluvial (fig.13), est constituée de feuilles d’acier découpées au chalumeau, suspendues à un mât. Soudée au nickel, La Grosse Bertha (fig. 14) ressemble à un cœur debout sur ses artères. Elle représente en fait l’immense trou causé par l’artillerie lourde du même nom lors de la Première Guerre mondiale. En son centre, l’obus est tenu par des câbles. Enfin, du haut de ses longues pattes, Thelonious Monk (fig. 15) n’est pas sans rappeler un volumineux piano sur lequel l’artiste a installé un système de roue permettant le déplacement des modules. Défiant l’espace et la gravité, se jouant du poids et de l’immobilité des métaux, Darby s’amuse et invite à faire comme lui: à s’engager dans la matière et à faire corps avec l’œuvre, à habiter l’espace avec elle. De même, l’intérêt marqué pour le mouvement n’est pas le résultat d’un engouement pour la technique tel que manifesté chez les futuristes au début du XXe siècle.
