Summary edit
DescriptionDonaghadee harbour and lighthouse - geograph.org.uk - 184581.jpg |
English: Donaghadee harbour and lighthouse. I apologise if this photograph resembles a thousand calendars and postcards. Donaghadee harbour was completed in 1837 to accommodate the mail boat service to Portpatrick. In the event Portpatrick proved difficult to enter in certain winds and the service moved to Larne-Stranraer. Donaghadee harbour has slumbered since then and is more or less unchanged. The pier still has traces of the old harbour railway. A light was first exhibited in 1836. In 1934, the lighthouse was the first in Ireland to be converted to electricity. The lifeboat is a Trent class named Saxon on station since 2003. |
