English: Double-sided mask relief, Roman, 1st half of 2nd century AD; from Rome; marble. Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Collection of Antiquities, Inv. no. I 119. Front side: three comic masks, Dionysian attributes and a little Amor. Four images show the same relief: front side, front side, front side, back side. These (often two-sided) mask reliefs were studied by Hans-Ulrich Cain: Hans-Ulrich Cain, Chronologie, Ikonographie und Bedeutung der römischen Maskenreliefs, in: Bonner Jahrbücher, vol. 188, 1988, pp. 107–221. The present relief is no. 99 in his catalogue. |
