Description

The RNLNAS or MLD operate Wals between september 1926 till WWII broke out in the Dutch East Indies in 1942. With The Dornier Wal the MLD get a robust and very dependebel flyingboat for the fleet. Witch give the MLD a reliable instrument for having eyes in every corner of the colony. First build in different variants and a other mark's and type's of engine's. Later the Wals have all the same standard Lorraine Dietrich. The first five MLD Wals registration D-1 till D-5, where equiped with Rolls Royce Eagle IX engines of 360 hp. And build by CMASA in Marina di Pisa in Italy. The D-6 till D23 where licenced buildt under Donier Metalbauten Gesellshaft and produced by Aviolanda Aircraft Construction Company. A slight hull modification was made for the Dutch flyingboats that was incorparated for the other Wals build everywhere. The rest of the Dutch Wals where equiped with the more powerful Lorraine Dietrich engines with 450hp. Later series where produced exclusively under licence by Aviolanda in the Papendrecht factory near Rotterdam. The Wal is equiped with the 'sponsons'the short wingstubs witch give the Wal a good seawortyness. Also there was the possibility to mount a pair of wooden wheels on the sponsons to bring her out of the water iff needed. The Wal was capabel too take off safe, on one engine! Note: The rear pusher propeller is a 2 blades, the front prop is in the MLD a 4 blade!
