English: A U.S. Navy Douglas A-1H Skyraider (BuNo 137543) of Attack Squadron 176 (VA-176) "Thunderbolts" aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVS-11), in October-November 1966. Lt.(jg) William T. Patton shot down an North Vietnamese Mikoyan-Gurevitch MiG-17 flying 137543 on 8 October 1966. Note the mission markers and the MiG-symbol below the canopy. VA-176 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 10 (CVW-10) aboard the Intrepid for a deployment to Vietnam from 4 April to 21 November 1966. The A-1H 137543 was transferred to the U.S. Air Force follwoing this deployment. It was later shot down over Laos on 2 July 1969. The pilot, Maj. Gregory I. Barras, was killed. |
