Summary edit

Description
English: The Dr. Robert Johnston House, 323 East Commerce Street at East Street, Milford, Michigan, December 2020. Despite the unfortunate (though thankfully inconspicuous) recent addition of aluminum siding to the exterior, the Johnson House remains a textbook example of the Italianate Villa school of architecture, with all the requisite stylistic elements on full display: strict bilateral symmetry on the façade, Classical detailing in the form of trios of fluted Doric columns supporting the balconet-crowned roof of the portico, a low-pitched hop roof, and - above all - a handsome lantern cupola at the top of the building, topped with its own bracketed hip roof and a finial above. Twin projecting bay windows flanking the entrance also feature prominently. The original owner was Dr. Robert Johnston (1838-1904), one of Milford's earliest practicing physicians; though the National Register of Historic Places gives 1869 as the date of construction, in reality it must have been some time later, as the 1870 census records Johnston as boarding at the home of carpenter John A. Grow on nearby Hickory Street, and the F. W. Beers Atlas of Oakland County, Michigan, published in 1872, places Milford's village lockup on the present-day site of the house.
