Une monnaie en argent, une drachme, du Ménandre 1er, roi du royaume indo-grec de 155 à 130 avant notre ère environ.

A/ BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPΟΣ / MENANΔPOY (Roi Ménandre le Sauveur) Buste diadémé de Ménandre 1er à droite. R/ En écriture Kharosthi « Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa » (Grand roi Ménandre le Sauveur) Athéna Promachos debout à gauche, brandissant éclairs et bouclier. Monogramme à droite de la jambe de la déesse désignant un atelier incertain des Paropamisades ou du Gandhara.

Discussion : Le roi Ménandre 1er est le roi indo-grec le plus connu. Il a gouverné les Paropamisades (région de l’Hindu-Kush autour de Kaboul et Bagram), l’Arachosie (Balouchistan), le Gandhara (bassin de Peshawar, Mardan et Taxila) et le Pendjab. Le Pendjab oriental sera perdu après sa mort. Si le roi s’est converti au bouddhisme, cela ne se voit pas sur ses monnaies.
