English: Drainage system, Aslackby Fen The drain running across the photograph follows Millthorpe Drove. The drain straight ahead appears to join with Pointon Lode in the far distance if you look at the 1:50,000 OS map. Looking at the larger scale map it is clear that this is not the case. All the drains on this Fen run to one main drain that intercepts the Forty Foot at the pumping station at Kingstons Bridge in TF1629 and do not empty directly into Pointon Lode.
Most highland water carriers such as Pointon and Sempringham Lodes that run through the Fens in this area, empty directly into the Forty Foot and are kept separate from the lower lying drains that criss-cross the Fens. Dykes and drains are usually manmade whereas Lodes are natural streams which have been incorporated into the drainage system across the Fens. |
