Notes |
Rowlands 1993 LITERATURE: Manchester, German Art, p. 53, no. 132; Rowlands, Dürer, p. 61, no. 369; BM Dürer and Holbein, p. 141, no. 111, repr. The overtly classical style of the bath-house in this drawing was doubtless the outcome of Vischer's close association with humanist circles in Nuremberg, in addition to his interest in Renaissance works which he would have seen in Italy. Similar elongated figures, drawn in the same technique, may be seen in his illustrations in Berlin-Dahlem, for Pankratz Schwenter's manuscript, 'Historia Herculis', dated 1515 (Kupferstichkabinett, KdZ. 1082 and 1083; Berlin, 'Dürer und seine Zeit', pp. 64f., nos. 57, 58, repr.), and the present drawing may well have been made at the same period. See Coryat's Crudities, London 1611, p.404 for a scandalised description of mixed-sex bathing in the baths at Baden near Basle in Switzerland as witnessed by hhim in 1608. |

editThis image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. ![]() |
