Description
English: Drawing by Henri Roux the Elder of 1st century CE fresco depicting Venus and Adonis labeled as Mars and Venus from the House of Bacchus (VII.4.10) in Pompeii.

Full translated description:
PLATE 139. "This painting was found in a building on the street where the Temple of Fortune is located, almost opposite the main entrance to the baths; building generally known under the name of House of Bacchus, because of an image of this god with which one of the rooms was decorated.

"The spear that we see in the hands of the young woman, and the four little Cupids frolicking around the group, have led some critics to decide that this fresco represents Mars and Venus. Wouldn't the spear rather be a hunting spear, which would indicate Adonis? Indeed, Mars would probably have the sword and the helmet.

"Be that as it may, the figures are happily grouped; but Venus is far from offering the delicate and graceful features one expects to find in the goddess of beauty. It is suspected that during the decade of the decadence of pagan beliefs, a few people had their portraits placed in allegorical paintings, in place of the conventional features of deities.

"The vignette represents a drapery appropriate to appear in an architrave." - Louis Barré, 1870
Date 1st century CE fresco; 1870 drawing
