Elastics should be removed once the dread is made, as elastics only hinder the dreadlocks' growth and progression.
The same applies to wax. You do not need, nor will you ever need, to put wax on new, or established dreadlocks. Wax can hinder the locking process and allow dirt and lint to collect within your dreads. As it is often water resistant, it can allow moisture to build up and collect inside your dreads. Your hair can then become mouldy, smelly and in some instances may fall out.
