Der Maler erhielt Anregungen in der Bewältigung des Motivs bei Tizians 'Himmelfahrt Maria'. Dieses prächtige Gemälde, das die Akteure in drei horizontalen Ebenen präsentiert, war lange Zeit durch ein anderes ersetzt gewesen, nämlich durch die 'Erlösung der Menschheit' von dem Theatermaler Johann B. Müller, das heute verschollen ist. Der Auftrag kam von König Friedrich August II.
