Summary
editDescriptionDrinking fountain, Cary Park - geograph.org.uk - 1602802.jpg |
English: Drinking fountain, Cary Park. A slightly closer view of 1148079, at the extreme west end of the linear park. Robert Shedden Sulyarde Cary, who was something of a recluse, died in September 1898. The inscription, from his widow, is dated 1903, and mentions "Torr" Abbey. Torre Abbey was the seat of the Carys, but it was only through the development of areas of Torquay such as this that the family fortunes were restored sufficiently for the couple to return to live there in 1872. He had married Margaret Stockman, a fisherman's daughter, in 1866, and the consequent social ostracism doubtless contributed to his reclusive nature. She continued to live at the Abbey until her death in 1907. http://www.torbay.gov.uk/torreabbey-souvenirguide.pdf http://www.caryfamily.co.uk/main.html |
