editDescriptionDromaius novaehollandiae, Duisburg - 0252.jpg |
The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is the largest bird in Australia and the second largest bird in the world, after the African ostrich. It is known for its imposing appearance, long legs and lack of wings that make it unable to fly. Emus have rough plumage that is mainly dark brown or grey-brown. They have a long neck with a small head and large, dark eyes. Their strong legs end in three toes, each with a sharp claw. These birds are native to the wide open grasslands and desert regions of Australia. They are excellent runners and can reach high speeds to escape predators. Emus also have the ability to go longer distances without water by regulating their body temperature and adjusting their metabolism. Emus are herbivores and feed mainly on grasses, leaves, fruits and seeds. They have a sensitive sense of smell and can find food even in dry or low fertility areas. These birds are known for their loud and characteristic trumpeting, which is used to communicate with conspecifics and to warn of danger. They are territorial and usually live in small groups or pairs. |
