Dubrovnik, formerly Ragusa of the Italian Ragusa until 1918, is a city and municipality of Croatia, capital of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It was once the capital of a maritime republic known as the Republic of Ragusa. Its inhabitants, as well as what relates to it, are still called Ragusans. According to the 2001 census, there were 43,770 inhabitants in the municipality, of whom 88.39 per cent were Croats, 3.26 per cent Serbs and 3.17 per cent Bosnians1, and the city alone had 30,436 inhabitants2. Its motto is: "Freedom does not sell even for all the gold in the world".

Located south of the Dalmatian coast, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, the Dubrovnik stronghold is an important Croatian tourist destination.
