Description
English: Arms of Duke family of Otterton, Devon: Per fesse argent and azure, three chaplets counterchanged. Source: Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.480; Robson, Thomas, The British Herald. However, the blazon is Per fesse or and azure, three chaplets counterchanged, according to Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitation of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.311. These arms may be seen (without tinctures) in Otterton Church (1589 stone monument & 17th.c. brasses) and sculpted impaled by Rolle on the parapet of St Anne's Walk, Barnstaple, built 1708, partly financed by Robert Rolle (d.1710), MP, of Stevenstone, husband of Elizabeth Duke, daughter of Richard Duke (1652-1733), MP, of Otterton.
