Description

Duke Street Crossing signal box located by the Down Main line alongside Duke Street level crossing in Southport. Sunday 26th April 1987

Duke Street signal box was a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Standard design fitted with a 12 lever Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Tappet frame which opened in 1921, replacing an 1878-built Saxby and Farmer signal box located on the opposite side of the level crossing. The signal box was renamed Duke Street Crossing some time after 4th June 1953 when it was reduced to a non block post controlling the adjacent level crossing only and the absolute block section was extended to between Southport South and Birkdale signal boxes. The signal box was closed at 19:00 on 11th March 1994 and was demolished almost immediately although was officially abolished on 21st March 1994 when control of the level crossing passed to Merseyrail signal box by means of closed circuit televison

The signal box carries a pair of London Midland and Scottish Railway post-1935 nameboards
