Summary edit

Description
English: Oregon Dunes is an active dune field along coastal Oregon. Much of the area has been artificially vegetated compared with decades ago. The sand is mostly quartz, plus feldspar, hornblende, garnet, pyroxene, olivine, epidote, opaque minerals, and lithic grains.

This is the downwind side of a sand dune (also known as the leeward side). Wind currents push sand grains up the low-angle windward side of a sand dune by traction (rolling) or saltation (jumping). Sand grains get deposited in the crest area of the dune until sufficient oversteepening results in a sand avalanche. Individual avalanche bodies form band-like lobes.

Locality: Oregon Dunes, western side of Route 101, Florence, far-western Lane County, coastal Oregon, USA (44º 00’ 26.23” North latitude, 124º 06’ 17.15” West longitude)
