Description

NPS/Patrick Myers People expect to see dunes in a barren desert...but are amazed to experience them in the Rocky Mountains!

The dunefield is cradled in a curve of the alpine Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where montane woodlands, subalpine forests, streams, alpine lakes and alpine tundra rise above the desert sand. Take time during your visit to enjoy some of the many ecosystems of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve!
