Description

Dunham Hill No2 signal box was located by the Down Main line between Rake Lane and Hapsford Lane road overbridges at Dunham on the Hill. Saturday 6th September 2008

Dunham Hill No2 was a London Midland and Scottish Railway Type 13 design which opened during the Second World War to serve the ROF Storage Depot at Dunham on the Hill, possibly in 1942. It was fitted with a Railway Executive Committee lever frame and I have a figure of 40 levers for the frame size, but I do not know where the information came from and it seems excessive for the layout and indeed the size of the box. After closure on 25th November 1951 the lever frame was removed and box remained derelict until demolished in late 2008, when Network Rail despite their best efforts deemed it to be too much of a magnet for the local youths

Although a Royal Ordnance Factory facility the Dunham on the Hill was mainly used for storage and distribution of explosives to other Royal Ordnance factories. Click here for a fuller and very interesting history of the ROF facility
