Description
English: Dust plumes blew off the coast southern Africa in mid-May 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on May 13. Parallel plumes blew towards the southwest from inland sources to stream across the over the South Atlantic Ocean. A broad plume can be seen north of the Orange River, rising from the sand seas of the Namib Desert. The plumes to the south of the Orange River are smaller, indicating they rise from point sources in South Africa. Such point sources include ephemeral inland lakes, coastal pans, and dry river valleys.
