Description
English: Dutton stop lock. Just south of Preston Brook tunnel is the stop lock separating the Bridgewater Canal (closer to us) from the Trent and Mersey Canal (beyond the lock). The lock has a rise of six inches up to the Trent and Mersey. As the later canal, the Trent and Mersey was forced to be higher so that as boats passed from one canal to the other there was always a small amount of water flowing to the Bridgewater Canal, their ransom for allowing the new canal to connect with theirs.
