Description |
English: After the old one-room Duwamish School closed in 1900, elementary school students had to walk three miles to Foster for school each day. Delia Merkle and several neighbors led a successful petition drive to form a school district and open a new elementary school in Duwamish. The new wood-frame Duwamish School building, for grades 1 through 8, opened in 1911 in the new School District 175. Later, a gymnasium and stage were added in the rear of the building.
This photo, taken around 1920, shows the front of the Duwamish School on 42nd Avenue South, now part of Tukwila, Washington. The building, with its large bell tower, also housed the local public library and served as a community gathering place. When it was torn down in 1974, long-time residents rescued the school bell and saved it for later display in Tukwila.
