DescriptionEB1911 Greek Art - Metope - Europa on Bull - Palermo.jpg |
English: A metope representing the journey of Europa over the sea on the back of the amorous bull, a pair of dolphins swimming beside her. Found in Selinunte, a Greek-Phoenician colony in Sicily, 6th-7th centries BCE. Between the bull's legs two dolphins, representing the sea beneath him. Oriental charactaristics such as his curly hair above his eyes, paralel lines around his eyes and on his neck, the tail over the calf and the face which (like all sacred animals in the Levant) faces the observer, are all pointing influence of Levantine art. |
