  • Wildfires continue to burn across western France, affecting particularly the Gironde and Landes Departments (the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region) and resulting in casualties.
  • According to the Operational Centre for Inter-ministerial Crisis Management (COGIC), three fighfighters were injured, one of them seriously, during thefirefighting operations. About 10,000 people have been evacuated, as the burned area has reached more than 6,600 ha in the Prefecture of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Gironde.
  • Evacuations continue also in Maine-et-Loire Department (Pays de la Loire, western France) after a wildfire in Baugé-en-Anjou has burned already more than 1,400 ha. The fire is contained.
  • On 9 August, France activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. In response, the European Commission has dispatched 4 airplanes from its rescEU firefighting fleet positioned in Greece and Sweden. In addition, firefighting teams from Germany, Poland, Austria and Romania are on their way to support French first responders. One liaison officer from the Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is being deployed to France to assist incoming EU assistance.
  • According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire risk is expected to be from very high to extreme on 11-12 August over most of France, particularly in southern and western areas.
