English: It is one of the oldest in the city almost certainly the seventeenth century (1612), although some say it was built in 1585 to replace the first church built by the founders. Built of rammed earth tread. apparently the street was open when the church was already built, being near the front and on the side of a rise overlooking the city, called "Loma de Cartagena" today completely urbanized. For its north side it passes the narrow cobbled street of Santa Catalina. The street that is in front, Chapel Street, is the only sample that was left of the city paved.
Interesting fact is that the strongest earthquakes that had the city in the eighteenth and nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1736-1817-1906) remained standing, while most others were severely damaged or came to pique . Between 1782 and 184 was cathedral, for being the metropolitan church in danger of ruin, while the functions of the cathedral church of the Company passed. Earlier this century, especially the cover showing the door flanked by two battery-after, they were joined with a curved pediment that receives the window roof and facade were renovated. The belfry was kept the same, with triumphal arch scheme. The most valuable of this church is the Baroque altarpiece, of great value, crowned by the triumphant eagles Austria, common in older altars of our artistic colony. The ordeal of this church is admirable, with his Spanish image of the crucified Lord, one of the oldest images of Popayan. Jesus of Nazareth Italian image and one of the most beautiful in the city. The Santa Rosalia of Palermo. The south side chapel is of this century, made by master Luis Carlos Valencia Guevara, dedicated to Christ the King, which opened in 1937, damaged by the earthquake of 83. Ermita out DLB Holy Wednesday procession. several steps of Saint Augustine and others belonging to the Hermitage. It has traditionally been among the poorest colonial churches. The earthquake of March 1983 severely damage the walls and ceilings of the Hermitage 31, the belfry came loose and fell. Fortunately carving works altarpieces and images were not destroyed. The payaneses retain for this church a special affection for his position, the beautiful street that precedes it, for its traditional poverty and because it is a small box that preserves a tradition of colonial art.
