It is also recorded that a high windwas blowing at the time. Lincoln made a notableand thoughtful address which was printed in TheWisconsin Farmer afterwards. After his address, Lincoln made a tour of theexhibits, witnessed some of the premiums awarded,and looked in on some of the side shows. Inone of the shows Lincoln saw a strong manhoist a big weight and he tried to perform thefeat himself, but was unsuccessful, although aman of great strength. Lincoln, turning to theathlete, remarked: Well, I can do something you cant. I can licksalt off the top of your head. Considering that Lincoln made a nonpoliticaladdress at the time, and that he had temporarilyabandoned his crusade in what he believed arighteous cause, this speech is most interestingas revealing Lincolns reflections on the more en-during phases of human society and activity. Itwas a particularly thoughtful and sincere addressand with some sentiments couched in the beautifuldiction which often marked his inspired utterances.
