DescriptionEarthworks, Leith Links - geograph.org.uk - 1537347.jpg |
English: Earthworks, Leith Links This mound is believed to have been created as a gun emplacement for the Siege of Leith in 1560. It lies to the east of a similar mound. The traditional belief in the origin of the mounds has been challenged by a local historian who asserts that they are merely natural hillocks and that the gun batteries were placed elsewhere. Nevertheless, the mounds owe their survival to the belief because they were deliberately spared when the Town Council levelled the ground to transform the Links into a public park. Whatever their significance, the mounds are scheduled ancient monuments.
