| Description |
English: Eastern United spoil heap, Forest of Dean The old Eastern United Colliery was shut down on Christmas Day 1965. Whilst it was working the 'spoil' or mud, rock and clay that was dug out with the coal was dragged up by a 'haulage' to this point above the Ruspidge/Soudley valley. Although very ugly and prone to erosion it is still a valuable resource as: 1) There are some 800 tons of house coal buried somewhere beneath it as a result of a past industrial dispute; 2) It has in very recent times been 'mined' for road-stone for use in building Britain's motorways. |
