Description

Tinted postcard of Eddington, Herne Bay, Kent, England. Postmarked "Herne Bay, Au 10, 08". The picture shows the original village or hamlet long before the area became a suburb of Herne Bay. Publisher: Photochrom Co. Ltd London. Most of the buildings in the photo still exist. The site is on the east side of the Canterbury Road (A299) looking north, just north of Priory House at the southern end of Eddington.

Points of interest:

  • The house in the foreground is in the Kentish vernacular style with limewashed weatherboarding, but the taller houses are late Victorian. There is no footpath. The orange-red roofs of the buildings in the foreground are pan-tiled.
  • Among the green-tinted bushes just above the white picket fence of the weatherboarded house, there is possibly a figure in the garden which has been obliterated by the green added colouring. It is just to the left of the open white picket gate. The dark figure in the middle of the road may have been sketched in.
  • The low building with double doors and tall chimney in the centre of the picture may have been the forge which is recorded at this crossroads. Also recorded here is the guidepost or signpost which can just be seen on the left side of the road in the distance.
  • Standing out in the distance on the left side of the road is a tall chimney, which may be the sewer vent column which is a listed building.
