English: Edinburgh, Holyrood Abbey. Arms: Sutherland (quartered) impaling Wemyss (quartered), for George Gordon, 15th Earl of Sutherland (1633-1703) and his wife Lady Jean Wemyss, daughter of David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss. Motto below coat of arms: SANS PEUR ("Without Fear" (Sutherland)) JE PENSE ("I Think" (Wemyss))

  • 1&4: Gules, three mullets or (Sutherland)
  • 2&3: Quarterly of 4 (as borne by Gordon family, Marquess of Huntley): 1: Azure three boar's heads couped or langued gules (Gordon); 2: Or, three lion's heads erased gules langued azure (Lordship of Badenoch); 3: Or, three crescents within a double tressure flory counter-flory gules (Seton); 4: Azure, three fraises argent (Fraser).

  • 2&3: A lion rampant (unknown tinctures & family)
Latin inscription in centre. Later inscription at bottom: Here also were interred the remains of his descendant William Earl of Sutherland & his consort Mary Maxwell. Who both died at Bath. She an the 1st & he on the 16th of June 1766. Lovely in their lives. In death not divided. (William Gordon, 18th Earl of Sutherland and his wife Mary Maxwell. Both died in 1766 at Bath, Somerset, when he was only 30).
