English: From the city's portal I quote, translated: "The bath was built by Mihal Bey in 1422. Evliya Çelebi mentions, "It is a very large bathhouse, and in a few of its private rooms there are tanners and blue, red, yellow, rose and orange sahtiyan dyes." Evliya Çelebi explains that perhaps a part of the bath changed its function in the 16th century and became a tannery (a place where leatherworkers tanned and seasoned the leather, a tannery). It was completely closed and left to its own devices after the Russians occupied Edirne during the Ottoman-Russian War in 1829. The bath is in semi-ruin today." |
