Summary edit

Description
English: Edison Street Community Church, 28 Edison Avenue, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. A paragon of the Colonial Revival style that was on the cusp of a second wave of popularity at the time of its construction, the building's design is simplified, but checks all the boxes when it comes to stylistic prerequisites: the façade is scrupulously symmetrical, there's a fanlight above the front entrance, and subtle Classical detailing (namely prominent gable suggestive of a broken pediment) abounds. The building was erected in 1925 to serve an unusual colony of Italian Baptists that had settled in the Delavan-Bailey district, the majority of whom hailed from the village of Pescasseroli, Abruzzo and were followers of a charismatic Baptist preacher based in a neighboring town, and who had spent the previous years attending services in private homes and occasionally at the Hudson Street Baptist Church on the West Side, whose congregation also included a sizable Italian-American contingent at the time. In tune with the demographic changes on the East Side as a whole, the ethnic makeup of the congregation gradually transitioned to an African-American majority as the 20th century wore on, yet it continues in existence in the same building, now under the name Edison Street Community Church.
