This again showsclearly that the purpose of the educational service was to beprimarily curative. The chief educational officer is in charge ofthe educational service. The position is not unlike that of thepresident of a college or vocational school, but with this difference,that the primary function of the school is therapeutic and con-sequently those who fix the policies and pass upon the generalefficiency of the work are the medical officers and the generaladministrative officers of the post. The chief educational officerhas on his staff an office administrative force which deals with allthe instructors and heads of departments. The work of recon-struction is divided into four departments—psychological, statis-tical, technical, and recreational or physical education. As the number of instructors on thestaff of a hospital might number as high as one hundred twenty-five, it is evident that in each department there might be afaculty as large as is often found in small colleges. The group of women known as reconstruction aides for occu-pational therapy is shown in the chart directly subordinate to thechief educational officer, but cooperating and participating inthe work of the four general departments. At first this seems apeculiar arrangement. It is not far different, however, fromthe practice in civil institutions in which there is a large group ofwomen instructors who appear in all departments of the schoolbut for convenience are directly responsible to a dean of facultywomen, who in hospital organizations corresponds to the super-visor of aides.
