Published by the Associated Cartoon Service. Artwork by Edwin F. Brotze.Edward Francis Sweeney (1860-1923) was born in San Francisco, and studied at St. Mary's College. He moved to Seattle in 1883. In 1884, Sweeney and W. J. Rule established a small brewery. In January 1893 Claussen-Sweeney merged with Hemrich's Bay View and the Albert Braun Brewing Company to form the Seattle Brewing and Malting Company. The officers of the new firm represented the old firms: Hemrich, president; Braun, vice president; and Sweeney, secretary-treasurer. Sweeney also at one point was the Director of the National Bank of Commerce, and built and owned the Savoy Hotel and the Butler Hotel. He was also owner of the Savoy Hotel and the Butler Hotel. In 1903 he married Jessie Luise Gair with whom he had four children.
