English: Resting place of dr Edward Grodyński, notary in Czarny Dunajec and judge, born 11 October 1887 in Kraków and died on 15 September 1959 in Polanica-Zdrój, (son of Władysław Grodyński, former Chief Magistrate of Kraków, and nephew of dr Andrzej Grodyński), and wife Anna (née Duszyńska) born in Kraków on 24 May 1902 and died on 15 March 1964, plus other members of her family*, at sector HE/PŁN in Rakowicki Cemetery, Kraków. Along with his brothers and their families, Władysław changed his surname from Kusionowicz to Grodyński in 1893 (document reference L 88839 9.XI.1893, #33399/46) and it is believed Edward, his mother Zophia and his sisters Elżbieta and Janina also changed their surnames at this time (third sister Irena was born in 1894 so it is presumed there was no need to change her surname).

• Apparently throughout Poland ‘grave naming rights’ may be sold on after a period of time (generally twenty years) unless remaining relatives pay ongoing cemetery fees. This regrettably often leads to the loss of burial details at the grave site of those interred unless the new ‘owners’ make provision to continue to exhibit the names of all who have been buried at the site. In this instance the names of Edward and Anna are no longer visible at the grave site, as evidenced in this photograph (which has been ‘annotated’ with a photo of the original plaque), and apparently at this time there is no legal obligation to exhibit those details. It is to be hoped that in the not too distant future that the Polish Government will change the existing regulations and in the meantime that cemeteries that currently facilitate this ‘re-naming practice’ will become more enlightened in ensuring the preservation of the history of Poland’s people.
