Summary
editDescriptionEdwin Davy (14996016517).jpg |
On 9 September 1850, Edwin Davy was born in Taranaki. A talented soldier, he led a noteworthy career in New Zealand’s military volunteer forces during the 1870s – 1890s. His military service was characterised by frequent promotions in rank, culminating in his becoming commander of the Wellington Naval Artillery Volunteer Brigade in 1896. He was also awarded the Imperial Volunteer Officers' Decoration, the Imperial Volunteer Long Service Medal and the New Zealand Volunteer Long and Efficient Service Medal. However, with the outbreak of the 1899 Boer War, Davy was advised that he was of too high a rank to be eligible to serve with the New Zealand contingents in the war. Davy therefore requested a reduction in rank to captain, which was granted and he sailed with the Fourth (Rough Riders) Contingent to South Africa in March 1900. He was promoted to the rank of major commanding the 1st Battalion in June and for his service he received the Queen's South Africa Medal with five clasps.
