| Description |
English: Eglwys Machraith Sant, Llanfachraith/Llanfachraeth St Machraith's Church stands alongside the A5025 north of the village of Llanfachraith. There has been a church here since the 7thC, but the present building is relatively modern, having been built in 1878. The village of Llanfachraith is also known as Llanfachreth and, to the OS, as Llanfachraeth. The late Prof. Melville Richards, regarded as the leading expert on Welsh place names, wrote that Llanfachraith was the correct form and while "One may accept Llanfachreth as a colloquial form, Llanfachraeth has to be rejected as a totally incorrect form of the name" (Enwau Tir a Gwlad pp 158 [1998]) |
