English: Eilanden River, Dutch New Guinea. 1944. A twenty foot bondwood launch was used by members of the Field Security Section (FSS) for extensive patrols to native villages close to the Japanese establishments at Japiro. Members of the FSS of the Australian Intelligence Corps were seconded to Army units in forward areas on intelligence duties. The launch was powered by a 22 horse power Johnson outboard motor. It was fueled by "range fuel", a high octane petrol. The men on patrol carried a ton of fuel, food, a Bren gun and .303 rifles. These patrols could last from seven to ten days. The flag on the launch is an Army Water unit flag with Union Jack in the top left hand corner and crossed daggers on the fly. Patrols normally consisted of Norman Nalder, who looked after the outboard engine, George (Harry) Phillips, FSS, on intelligence duties and on some occasions another soldier. (Donor G. Phillips) |
