English: The paint and bodywork complete, the El Camino emerges from Mascar. Since my new garage was still under construction at this time, the car was sent to storage in a rented space on Newport Blvd.
The color is similar to a factory color available in 1966. I thought about what color to paint the car for a long time, since I didn't really want anything flashy, and I wanted a factory color or close to it. Then one day in the late nineties I saw a guy with a 1966 Chevelle sedan at the Long Beach Hot Rod Swap Meet and the car had the original factory paint, a shade called Cameo Beige. I decided that was the color I wanted. It seemed to be similar to the color of the head of a Guinness. When it came time to paint the car, I poured some Guinness for Kenny so he could work out a paint formula to match the color of the head. The result is a great color, but it doesn't look much like the Cameo Beige on this paint chip. But I'm not sure how accurate that chip is after all these years, or how accurate the color is as scanned or reproduced. My El Camino seems to be similar to my memory of that four-door I saw in Long Beach that day. |
