DescriptionEldorado National Forest - Social 11.jpg |
English: AQUATIC SURVEYS - A larval southern long-toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum sigillatum) was found in this lake in the Mokelumne Wilderness during a field survey. Adult long-toed salamanders breed in ponds and lakes, where the carnivorous larvae feed on insects, crustaceans, snails, and tadpoles, and in turn are preyed upon by beetles, garter snakes, and dragonfly larvae. At high elevations, larvae may require up to three summers to transform into adults. Adults spend much of the year underground, and may live for up to 10 years. The southern long-toed salamander is considered a Species of Special Concern by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife; threats include predation by non-native fish and shrinking ponds driven by climate change.
