English: On this day - 4 February 1950 - the British Empire Games opening ceremony was held at Eden Park in Auckland. The Empire Games was later known as the Commonwealth Games. This was the fourth games, originally due to be held in Canada in 1942, but cancelled because of World War II.
Gold medalists for New Zealand included Harold Nelson - 6 miles, Yvette Williams - long jump (she also won a silver medal for javelin), the coxed four (rowing) and the men’s freestyle relay team in swimming. Eden Park was the main venue, and most athletic events were held there, the marathon started there and went around Waitemata Harbour. Other venues included Newmarket pool for swimming, Auckland Town Hall - boxing and wrestling, Western Springs - track cycling. This letter from the organising committee is a request for the provision of a dressing shed for the cycling road race addressed to the Auckland Ministry of Works.
