Das Gemälde lässt sich 1665 im Cabinet de Bye in Leiden nachweisen. Seine Dresdner Ersterwähnung erfuhr im Inventar von Pietro Guarenti 1747–1750, wonach es sich zu jener Zeit im königlichen Gemäldekabinett im Dresdner Schloss befand. Im Jahr 1817 war es laut des Galeriekatalogs von Karl Friedrich Demiani, dem Inspektor der Gemäldesammlung, in der Äußeren Galerie – den der nordalpinen Malerei vorbehaltenen Räumen – des Galeriegebäudes am Neumarkt ausgestellt. Später kam es auch im 1855 eröffneten Museumsbau von Gottfried Semper am Zwinger zur Aufstellung. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde es in der Meißner Albrechtsburg und im Kalksteinbruch Pockau-Lengefeld ausgelagert. Es gehört zu den Werken, die seit 1945 vermisst werden.
