  • Scope and content: Original Caption: Dr. Karl Buenz, prominent German plotter sent to serve jail term after respites and delays. Dr. Karl Beunz former German minister to Mexico, later German Consul-General in New York, who was the directing head of the Hamburg American steamship line in the U.S. when a state of war between the United States and German was declared to exist April 6, 1917. Buenz was convicted in 1916 for conspiring to make New York City a supply base for German naval raiders and was sentenced by Judge Harland B. Howe of Vermont to serve two years in the Federal Penitentiary at Atlanta, Georgia. Physicians declared Buenz was physically incapacitated for serving this sentence and he was permitted to remain at his suite of rooms at the German Club in New York until April 25, 1918, when U.S. Marshall Thomas D. McCarthy sent him to the penitentiary to serve his sentence.
