EFFING FOREST. 125 was the tradition of the people that this custom had itsorigin in a grant from Queen Elizabeth, and that it wasconditional on their beginning to lop the trees as theclock struck the hour of midnight on the preceding night.They were wont to meet for that purpose at StaplesHill within the Forest, wliere, after lighting a fire andcelebrating the occasion by draughts of beer, theylopped from twelve till two oclock, and then returnedto their homes. The branches, according to the custom,could not be faggoted in the Forest, but were madeinto heaps six feet high, and were then drawn out ofthe Forest in sledges. In olden times the first loadwas drawn out by white horses. The wood could onlybe cut for the use of the inhabitants of the parish.Whatever the orici^in of this risht may have been, itwas certainly much older than the time of QueenElizabeth ; for the rolls of the Manor in the early partof her reign mention the user as a custom.
