Description
English: The four-rotor Enigma M4 was introduced by the Navy of Nazi Germany (Kriegsmarine) in 1942 for U-boat communications.

Mémorial de Caen, Normandy, France; 8th July 2022.

  • The Enigma machine is a cipher device developed and used in the early- to mid-20th century to protect commercial, diplomatic, and military communication. It was employed extensively by Nazi Germany during World War II, in all branches of the German military. The Enigma machine was considered so secure that it was used to encipher the most top-secret messages. See also [[:en:Cryptanalysis of the Enigma#M4 (German Navy 4-rotor Enigma)|]].
  • The Mémorial de Caen is a museum and war memorial in Caen, Normandy, France commemorating World War II and the Battle for Caen. More generally, the museum is dedicated to the history of the twentieth century, mainly focused on the fragility of peace. Its intention is "pay a tribute to the martyred city of the liberation" but also to tell "what was the terrible story of the 20th century in a spirit of reconciliation".
