Notes
  • Significance: Philadelphia's "Free and Accepted Masons" has assembled in at least fourteen different locations before the present Masonic Temple on Penn Square was constructed between 1868 and 1873. Until 1808, meetings were generally held in structures that were extremely modest. By the early 19th century, freemasonry was flourishing throughout the United States and Philadelphia, particularly the Masonic order was able to build temples that were among the city's major architectural landmarks.
